Title: Custom Connector Authentication Succeeds with Invalid Credentials
AnsweredDescription:
For the custom connectors we have developed and explored in the Fivetran community, connectors configured with a Connect Card can report successful authentication even when invalid credentials are provided.
The connection initially appears to be authenticated successfully, but after the sync begins, it eventually fails during the table creation or data synchronization process.
Expected Behavior:
-
Invalid credentials should be detected during the authentication process.
-
The connection should not be marked as authenticated if the provided credentials are incorrect.
-
A clear authentication error should be returned to the user before the sync begins.
Actual Behavior:
-
Authentication is marked as successful despite incorrect credentials.
-
The sync starts but fails later during table creation or data synchronization, resulting in a delayed and unclear error.
Request:
Is there a recommended way to validate credentials during the Connect Card authentication flow for custom connectors, ensuring that invalid credentials are detected early and reported clearly before the sync process begins?

We provide setup test capability for this exact purpose. The connector needs to provide them to check the validity of the entered credentials. Please refer to this doc page for implementing them for your setup form: https://fivetran.com/docs/connector-sdk/building-connectors/connector-sdk-setup-form#setuptests
