Connector Improvement: Standalone Proxy Agent Installer (ZIP) for Binary Log Reader Deployments

Hi Fivetran Team,

We are currently using Fivetran’s HVA for SQL Server ingestion into Snowflake and are in the process of migrating from the HVA agent-based approach to the Binary Log Reader method for Change Data Capture. However, we will continue to require the Proxy Agent component for network connectivity to our on-premises SQL Server instances.

At present, the only way to obtain the Proxy Agent is through the full HVA installer package, which bundles both the HVA agent and the Proxy Agent together. Since we are moving away from HVA and no longer require the HVA agent functionality, installing the full package introduces unnecessary components into our environment.

We use the ZIP-based installation method (not the EXE installer), and currently the Proxy Agent ZIP is bundled within the HVA ZIP package. As part of our transition, we require a standalone downloadable ZIP package that contains only the Proxy Agent, which can be installed using command-line automation.

A standalone Proxy Agent installer would help us:

  • Simplify deployment and maintenance processes

  • Avoid installing unused components

  • Align with our migration to the Binary Log Reader architecture

  • Maintain cleaner server configurations and compliance controls

Could you please confirm whether a standalone Proxy Agent installer is available, or if there are plans to provide one separately? If it is not currently available, we would like to formally request this as a feature enhancement.

    Thank you for the detailed context. This is very helpful.

    A standalone Proxy Agent installer is currently on our Q2 roadmap. We recognize the need for decoupling the proxy agent, especially for customers transitioning from the HVA to the Binary Log Reader. 

    Note that you will receive a Docker image instead of a zip file, which you should include in your installation package. 

    I don’t have an exact release date to share just yet, but this is actively planned work. We’ll reach out as soon as it becomes available.

    As I believe was discussed on the call with our Proxy Agent engineering team recently,

    We are shipping containerized proxy (which will fulfill the standalone installer requirement) by end of Q1, using docker.  It will be unbundled from HVA in a similar timeframe.

    We will not provide a standalone ZIP or windows installer, however.
