Hi Ian! We have released the latest version of Xero that includes support for tracking categories! Let us know if you are able to access them in your end reports when your Xero Quickstart data models are upgraded to  the latest version. If you have any issues, questions or concerns, please raise a support ticket!

    Cheers,

    Avinash Kunnath

    Hey Ian,

Thanks for opening this up and apologies for the delay. This definitely sounds like something plenty of other folks would also find useful!

I'd like to ask a few questions to better understand the feature:

    • By "both" of the Tracking Category option columns, are you referring to the tracking_category and the tracking_category_option fields?
    • In a similar vein, are there any other fields you would want included? Like tracking_category.status or anything else from tracking_category_option
    • I see that both invoice line items and journal lines can have tracking categories, as the ERD contains both invoice_line_item_has_tracking_category and journal_line_has_tracking_category tables (in addition to bank_transaction_line_item_has_tracking_category and credit_note_line_item_has_tracking_category, though we do not use bank transaction or credit note line items in the data models currently). For the Invoice Line Items model, I assume we would naturally use the invoice line item tracking category. For the General Ledger and P&L models, I imagine we would use the journal line tracking category. Is this aligned with your thinking?
    • It appears that a single line item can be associated with multiple tracking categories. Looking at Xero's docs, however, I am wondering if it's safe to assume that a line item will have a maximum of 2 tracking categories. Can you confirm if this is true? If so, we can probably create a tracking_category_1 and tracking_category_2 field in these end models. Otherwise, if there is no maximum, we may need to create a JSON field instead that looks something like {"Department": "Marketing", "Region": "EMEA", "Priority": "1"}

    Thanks again!

Hey there Ian, just following up here :)

Hi Jamie, seeems you did not get my email reply I sent a couple weeks ago, here it is:

    Hey Ian,

Thanks for sharing--I can't seem to find that email anywhere.

Your answer clears up most of my questions! If you're still open to it, it would be great to meet on a quick call. I'd like to just double-check a couple of my understandings with you and discuss how you can potentially test out the update.

Here's my booking link if that sounds good to you.

    Thanks,

    Jamie

    Hi Ian,

Just wanted to let you know that the Solutions team is actively working on adding Tracking Categories and we hope to have a release live for you to test out sometime in the next few weeks. Let me know if you have any questions!

    Cheers,
    Avinash
